A representative of people living with disabilities, Mr Amon Mpanju, a lawyer, reads a copy of the Proposed Constitution, which has been published in braille format for the visually impaired, after receiving it from the Constitution and Legal Affairs minister, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Dar es Salaam. The government yesterday distributed about 658,700 copies of the Proposed Constitution to government institutions, civil society organisations and religious groups in Dar es Salaam.
The minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs,
Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, distributed the copies to the Office of the Prime
Minister, ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture as well as the
Judiciary, among other public institutions. She said the government was
optimistic that wananchi would thoroughly read the proposed constitution
and make the right decision during the referendum.
“The government has printed more copies that will
accommodate the blind and people with visual problems……we should make
sure that all cadres of our people get copies and understand the content
before making their decision over the proposed constitution,” Dr Migiro
said.
Dr Migiro said at least two million copies of the
proposed draft have already started to be distributed both in Tanzania
Mainland and Zanzibar. She noted that 1.8 million copies are being
distributed in the Mainland and 200,000 in the Isles. The regions and
the number of copies already distributed, in brackets, include Katavi
(15,640), Rukwa (27,040), Ruvuma (47,740), Mbeya (78,640), Simiyu
(34,840), Mara (52,540), Tabora (58,540) and Kigoma (41,440). Other
regions include Kagera (54,340), Geita (36,940), Mwanza (57,040).
On civic education for the proposed Katiba and
campaigns, she said the two events would be held together. Asked whether
the government would shelve plans for the April referendum oversetbacks
that face the Biometric Voter Registry (BVR), the minister said they
were optimistic the exercise would go ahead as planned.
