COMPREHENSION AND SUMMARY

1.       Read the passage below and then answer the questions that follow.

Before taking up a new diplomatic assignment in Ceylon (Sri lanka, now) I spent a week at a big hotel in New Delhi. It was one of those modern hotels where every room is the same size and has the same furniture, and looks just like every other room.
My room was 311 on the 3rd floor. One night, quite late, I got back to the hotel after a very good dinner with some friends. I walked into the lift and passed the button. When the lift stopped, I got out and walked to my room. When I opened the door, I saw an astonishing scene. A man was pointing a revolver at a woman sitting in armchair and the woman was saying in a frightened voice. “Please don’t shoot me.” I turned round, ran along the corridor and down the stairs. I didn’t wait for the lift and found the night porter in hall.
“Quick”, I cried, “Some one is being murdered in my room.” Controlling his surprise he came back with me, but when we opened the door of 311, the room was empty.
The porter looked at me strangely, said, “ I think, sir, you had better go to bed,” and left. I was too be wildered to protest, and thinking that I must have had too much of drink. I followed his advice.
At least I thought I haven’t heard a revolver shot.
The next morning I made some enquires, and the explanation was really quite simple. I had gone to room 411 on the floor above, where a famous actor and his wife had been rehearsing a scene from their new play. When I told them, it was I who had burst into their room, they laughed and gave me a ticket to see the play on the opening night.

Trees play an important role in preserving and protecting our environment on earth. They release oxygen into the air and absorb carbon dioxide. In this way they help to reduce the amount of pollution in the earth’s atmosphere. They also play an important part in the water cycle as they release moisture into the atmosphere through their leaves. This helps the formation of clouds which bring rain.
Loss of trees can therefore be a cause of drought. In addition, at times when there is a lot of rain, trees can soak up much of the extra water and so they help to prevent floods.
Trees also benefit the soil where they grow. They prevent soil erosion as they work like nets trapping soil and stopping it from being washed away.
In addition, fallen trees, branches and leaves decay on the ground, making the soil more fertile.
