TIME: 3 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS:-

-          This paper consists of four (4) sections: A, B C and D.

-          Answer all questions from sections A, B, C and only two questions from section D.

SECTION A: COMPREHENSION AND SUMMARY

1.      Read the following passage and then answer the questions after it. (5 marks)

A volcano is an opening at the top of a mountain sometimes this opening may be on the side of the mountain. Funnel like structure called a crater connects the opening to the interior of the earth. Hot steam, rocks and Lava are forced out through the opening during a volcanic eruption.

Volcanic mountains can erupt violently or less violently. During the violent explosions usually a large amount of gas becomes trapped in the interior of the earth. Slowly, the gas builds up more and more pressure. Finally, it escapes into the atmosphere with force, throwing everything around it into the air. Explosive eruptions of this kind are common in Italy. In the Islands of Hawali, the common type of volcanic eruption is the less violent one. Lava and gas silently flow out of the mountain and spread down wards long distance.

Volcanic eruptions have been source of disasters from time immemorial. Between the beginning of the sixteenth century and the second World War, about 200,000 people may have been wiped off the earth’s surface. Huge sea waves, landslides and falling buildings, usually accompany violent eruptions. These contribute a great deal to the deaths and damage.

In 1983, Mt Laki in Iceland erupted. Volcanic ashes, which fell on the surrounding region caused famine and epidemics that affected nearly 100,000 people. In 1988 a volcanic mountain called Krakatoa in Malaysia exploded and caused sea waves that drowned the coastal regions of java and Sumatra Island. In 1902, a whole town called Saint Pierre in Martinique was wiped out by a volcanic eruption on Mt. Palee.

Volcanic eruptions may sometimes be a source of blessing many years later. The fertile slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro are a good example. The lava that flowed from the crater many years ago has today turned into soil which is very good for the cultivation of bananas and coffee. Hot springs and geysers which are common in volcanic areas are another beneficial example. The molten masses beneath the earth’s surface continue to give off high vapours and gases while cooling down. These gases escape through rock openings to the earth’s surface. On the way the steam gets mixed with ground water to form a solution used to treat diseases. Hot springs are also tourist attractions as in New Zealand. Volcanic eruptions may also lead to formation of lakes. Lake Kivu in East Africa was formed in this way.
