The trade fair was very crowded. Everybody seemed to be busy. Some people were buying things while others were looking at various displays, there were about 50 companies from East and Central Africa present at the fair.

Yunia was not interested in just moving around and looking at things, he was interested in science and technology; he was therefore attracted to these pavilions where the attendants were explaining and describing things.

Yunia entered one pavilion belonging to a cigarette company from Zambia, there was not much to learn in there, he walked out and entered another.

This one was quite lively, it dealt with electric goods, the place looked like a power station, there were generators, turbines, cables and all sorts of electrical gadgets and sources of electricity. The electrician was demonstrating something, he answered and visitor’s questions cheerfully and clearly. Yunia cleared his voice and asked “Sir, we’re told that if you touch an electric wire, you’ll die. Now; why is it that birds stand on them and fly off unhurt?”

The electrician laughed and said, “That’s a good question young man” “Oh! I wanted to ask the same question” someone interrupted.” “This is the fifth time I’ve answered that question,” said the electrician. “Well, it’s simple. You get a shock when you touch both wires’ live or neutral one you won’t be affected. This is because the electric circuit is not complete, but make sure you have your shoes on.” The visitors became more attentive. “If your feet are naked and you’re standing on something that can conduct electricity, you’ll certainly be in trouble.

“This is because the circuit is completed.” The visitors started murmuring and looked more curious. “We,  I’m sorry it’s lunch time, so more questions tomorrow.” The electrician finished. Yunia went home, and in the evening asked his father the same question “well, I think the outer skini of a birds foot is dead’ and so it acts as an insulator, it does not conduct electricity, but you had better ask your teacher at school” his father said.

Two days later Yunia paid a visit to his friend Kabwe, it was Sunday and the family were busy cleaning the house “Kabwe, could you play that cassette please?” Yunia requested “I’m afraid we have no electricity today.” “Oh! I’ve forgotten, we’ve got the same problem at home.” “Now boys, you’ll clean the sitting room while I do the kitchen,”

Kabwe’s mother said, she poured a lot of water on the kitchen floor and started to scrub with a brush.

Kabwe, Yunia and Betty went on chatting in the sitting room, suddenly two things happened simultaneously. The lights went on and a scream was heard from the kitchen “Help! Help! Everybody jumped up. In a flash Betty was on her way to the kitchen “Mum! What is wrong?” She cried. No sooner had she set her foot in the kitchen, than she was also stuck. She started screaming louder than her mother.

Kabwe stood up and rushed to the kitchen as well, but Yunia thought and reacted fast, he stood quickly and pulled him back shouting “you will be electrocuted! Don’t go!” He then tablecloth in two pieces. He wrapped his hands in these pieces and rushed into the kitchen. In two seconds, he had pulled Betty and her mother safety.

He left them lying in the sitting room and stood on a chair to turn off the main switch, he went into the kitchen again, to try and identify the source of the problem, he searched everywhere, but without success, then he looked behind the fridge “Gracious me!” he exclaimed. The wire connecting it to the wall socket was lying in a pool of water, and a rat had eaten some parts of its outer casing.
