SECTION A

1.       Read the following passage and then answer the questions that follow:

It was a bright Saturday morning and members of science club were having a study trip upcountry, they were going to visit Mzee Chigundu in Chihuhu village, everyone had heard a lot about this old man but what made the club want to visit him was that he was a herbalist who knew about lots of plants that can cure various diseases.

At nine thirty Mr. Akber Somji; the patron of the club, arrived on his motorcycle. “You haven’t been there before, have you?” he asked. “No and we’re actually becoming impatient” one of the students responded no sooner had Mr. Somji parked his motorcycle than some loud continuous bangs were heard from a far, then a pick-up van came into sight, emitting a heavy cloudy of black fumes. The brakes screeched as the driver slowed down; quickly the driver’s mate jumped down from the back and put a heavy wooden block in front of the front tires.

The vehicle groaned to a stop, “will this van really make it to the village?” someone asked. “Sure it will,” the drivers mate replied. “Don’t worry man, this pick-up can even take you to Greenland.” The students laughed at the joke.

“Ok, let’s get in,” Mr. Somji shouted the students scrambled in with their pieces of luggage. “Hey give her a push first,” shouted the driver’s mate.

Three students jumped down and helped him to push the vehicle it rattled several times but finally it started. If was ten thirty when the journey to Chihuhu began, by six, the van had not yet reached the village, they decided to stop at the roadside to have their evening meal.

One hour later they were ready to resume the journey. “Give her push again,” the driver’s mate said. Several students was no sign of hope, at each attempt, the engine just rattled loudly and died away. The driver opened the bonnet to check what was wrong, he used a trial and error method to detect the fault but in an hour’s time he had not succeeded. Finally he gave up, he called Mr. Somji and they had a private discussion, later Mr. Somji said, “I’m afraid we are going to spend the night here, it appears there is something seriously wrong with the pick-up.” The students looked at him, and then the pick-up. They were disappointed but there was nothing they could do.

They collected their bedding and stretched themselves out on it. There was deep silence, it was James who broke the silence. “It could be the ignition system,” he said “ignition!” Mr. Somji said disapprovingly. “Do you know anything about cars?” he enquired “Of course yes.” We have got several cars at home.” “Then go ahead and repair this one,” Chiduo said while lying on the ground. This was followed by sarcastic laughter. “Ok, since we don’t have anything to do let us give James a chance to tell us how a car engine works.” Mr. Somji continued, so James began “A vehicle like the pick-up uses an internal combustion engine.” “you are a liar James, go to sleep.” It was Chiduo again. “Come on Chiduo, give James a chance; if you have a question you can ask him later,” Mr. Somji said. James continued.” It’s called an internal combustion engine because fuel burns inside the engine to produce power, there are petrol engine and diesel engines. A petrol engine works differently from a diesel engine, since this pick-up has a petrol engine, I will talk about a petrol engine. “The most important parts of a petrol engine are the pistons; these are connected to the crankshaft by a connecting rod. When the pistons go up and down, the crankshaft rotates and causes the wheels to rotate as well, making the vehicle move.

“The working cycle of a petrol engine comprises four strokes. A stroke is the up and down movement of a piston, the first stroke is when the piston goes down allowing fuel and air into the cylinder at this point the exhaust valve is shut. The second stroke is when the piston begin to travel upwards closing the inlet valve, compressing the fuel and air, and causing a high temperature, when the piston reaches the highest point in the cylinder the third stroke begins, this is when the temperature has risen to about 1500 – 18000C causing the spark plug to ignite.

The gas which is formed pushes the piston down again, the high temperature in the cylinder causes the exhaust valve to open and the piston goes down, then the piston travels up pushing out waste gas through the exhaust valve. After that the piston goes down again and the whole process is repeated, this up and down movement takes place very fast, and the process rotates the crankshaft which in turn rotates the wheels” James paused. “Is this clear to everybody?” James asked. His question was answered by snores, everybody was asleep including the driver, his mate, the students even Mr. Somji. James looked at the watch it was ten o’clock, he had no alternative but to join his colleagues.

At six in the morning, everybody was awake, the driver had already opened the bonnet and was re-checking the engine, James went over him, “Have you checked the plugs?” he asked.

The driver examined them one after another then he said “Well they are OK.” James looked at them very carefully. “I can see some grey coating on them, give me a piece of sandpaper,” he said. He cleaned the plugs with sandpaper, and fixed them on to the engine again.

“OK now, start the engine again,” he told the driver, the driver switched it on and to everybody surprise the pick-up started. There were shouts everywhere, “James the mechanic, James the mechanic …………”
